ADVOCACY

Advocacy is a scheme whereby a professional worker will assist you in getting your voice heard, or speak on your behalf if you are reluctant or are having difficulties in doing so. You may need this service if you are having problems getting a particular benefit that you feel you are entitled to, or if you just feel that you need to be represented when dealing with or talking to authorities for any other reason.

Advocacy is often available for free, but as this is not always the case you should check with the organisation to see if there is a charge for their advocacy service.

BEREAVEMENT

When a loss is experienced, a person’s reactions can vary a great deal — in both emotional and physical ways. Some may feel depressed, or permanently exhausted.

Sharing feelings with others is important. This is part of coming to terms with the loss and accepting that it has happened. However, not everyone will have family or friends to support them, and some will prefer to seek their support elsewhere.

Some of these organisations that specialise in helping bereaved people offer individual counselling, or the opportunity to attend a self-help group.

CARERS

Carers are ordinary people. Many have had no training to prepare them for caring for a partner, child, relative or friend who, because of severe illness, disability, mental health problems or frailty, is unable to manage without their assistance.

From time to time carers may need to talk to someone who understands what it is like to be in their position — particularly at times of stress, or when major decisions have to be made.

It is also vital for carers to have access to information and advice on a whole range if issues, such as respite care, benefits or support groups. West Berkshire Council publishes a free booklet called “Information for Carers” that lists a vast number of contacts and resources relevant to carers in West Berkshire.

HEALTH SERVICES

If you are concerned about your health, or that of the person you are looking after, then the best thing to do is speak to your doctor, health visitor or district nurse at your local surgery.

Remember that you may be able to get an “exemption certificate” that entitles you to free prescriptions; otherwise a season ticket means you can get prescriptions at a lower price, if you are taking regular medication on a long term basis. Talk to your doctor or a pharmacist.

Alternatively, there are also other resources that may provide advice on health matters.
